Dordrecht during world war two

A collection of historical items from World War II in Dordrecht.

Original negatives - May 1940.

On this page, you will find original negatives from May 1940. Below, you can see nine original negatives from the Second World War, taken by a German soldier who traveled through the Netherlands. Each image is interesting in its own right. After crossing the Zwijndrecht bridges, he continued his way along Rijksstraatweg to Willemsdorp. Then past the police troop barracks and the car junkyard in Willemsdorp and along Hotel Waterloo. Finally, over the Moerdijk bridges towards Brabant.

In Image 1, the factories in Zwijndrecht can be seen. In Image 2, the Zwijndrecht bridges and the lift bridge over the Dokhaven. Image 3 shows a German vehicle on Rijksstraatweg. To the left is the destroyed café on Glazenstraat. This is roughly where Battalion Ravelli walked into a catastrophic ambush. Coincidentally, the website Zuidfront-Holland had previously published this photo. They probably have the developed photo of it.
Through the following link, you can find more interesting information about the related image.

Image 4 shows the police troops barracks, heavily damaged by Dutch artillery and the battles of May 1940. Image 5 is the car junkyard in Willemsdorp, and to the right in the image is the police troops barracks. Image 6 shows Hotel Waterloo in Willemsdorp. On the far right, you can just make out a piece of artillery in the roadside ditch, with a number of ammunition crates in front of it. It appears to be a destroyed Dutch anti-tank gun.
The last three photos show the Moerdijk bridges. The route towards Brabant.

The negatives below depict interesting images of the damage in Dordrecht after the May days of 1940. The war left its marks. The images clearly show that even the city center of Dordrecht suffered during the events of May 1940. The photographs bear a striking resemblance to the photo series available on the image database of the Regional Archive of Dordrecht. However, these shots are somewhat different.
