Nicolaas Huige was born on June 8, 1918, in ’s Heer Arendskerke. He was the son of Johannis Huige and Jobbina Allemekinders and worked as a butcher. On November 9, 1939, he was transferred to the Motor Service Corps. During the mobilization, he served in the Troop Detachment Headquarters of the Light Division (Tr.Det.Stk.LD.).

On May 12, 1940, the Light Division engaged in action within the city of Dordrecht. On May 13, 1940, a defensive line was established behind the city canal of Dordrecht. Several bridges were defended to prevent German troops from entering the city center. A defense was also set up at the Vriesebrug by various units. A 7-Field cannon from the Corps of Motorized Artillery (KRA), under the command of Sergeant Otto Kruithof, was positioned there. An anti-tank gun (PAG) from PAG II-2 R.W., commanded by Lieutenant Boots, and a heavy machine gun operated by soldiers of the Corps of Army Maritime Engineers were also part of the defenses.

On May 13, 1940, German tanks from the 9th Panzer Division launched an attack on the city center, attempting to cross bridges that were being defended by Dutch forces. Conscripted soldier Huige had joined the 7-Field gun crew under Sergeant Kruithof. The artillery piece became engaged in a firefight with the advancing German tanks. One tank was successfully disabled by the 7-Field gun, but a second tank returned fire and struck the gun, resulting in several casualties among its crew. According to Sergeant Kruithof, Nicolaas Huige was severely wounded in the exchange of fire. He was treated at the Roman Catholic hospital in Dordrecht, where he passed away later that same day.                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                       Nicolaas Huige.
