17. Dordrecht- De Vriesestraat May 1940

A photo of the Vriesestraat. There is extensive devastation visible among the houses and shops. If you look closely, you can still see the 7‑Field gun on the right, with which Wachtmeester Kruithof of the Korps Rijdende Artillerie and his gun crew fired at the German tanks attempting to cross the Vriesebrug on 13 May 1940. The 7‑Field gun received a direct hit, killing conscripted soldiers Burgers and Van den Akker. Wachtmeester Kruithof and conscripted soldier J. Eijkelenberg were seriously wounded in the firefight with the German tanks.
